Steps:

1. Begin the game, set it to windowed.

2. Focus on another window

3. Come back to the game. It will gray out; if user clicks more, Windows reports "This program is not responding". Waiting it out takes several minutes but it usually returns.

The latest public build right? If so, I'll have to try it later. Since the additional full screen resolutions were added, I have been playing it full screen instead of windowed mode.

Correct, this is in the latest public build (as of last Sunday night).

I have tried multiple times this past weekend to alt-tab out in fullscreen mode and it also freezes up the game immediately when cycling alt-tab back to Skulls. One caveat though is I currently have Windows 8.1 Pro Preview installed, so I'll try it on another machine I have which is running Windows 8 Pro and report back later today.

UPDATE: I was able to alt-tab without issue in Windows 8. Must be an issue with Windows 8.1 Preview that will (hopefully) be fixed by Microsoft before release.

It seems to be an issue with all of my Steam apps, not just Skulls Beta, so I posted a question on the Microsoft Answers forum (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1_pr-gaming/why-do-steam-apps-not-respond-when-alt-tab-cycle/fc3d3089-855e-44d9-8009-11649617cbdb). I'll edit again once I find a solution that works.

Well, I received a reply from a Microsoft rep to try the latest Windows 8.1 Preview drivers from AMD for my graphics card but that didn't seem to make a difference. Since that time I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and clean installed Windows 8 Pro again. I'm hoping it's just one of those things that will work itself out by release.

As an update I finally contacted Steam support and received the following reply:

"Please note, that Steam does not officially support any version of Windows 8 - only Windows XP, Vista, or 7. "

Given that, I changed the compatibility mode for Skulls of the Shogun to Windows 7 and it prevented the alt-tab "not responding" app crash.

I apologize for not posting this sooner, but the released version of Windows 8.1 does not have the same alt-tab game hang issue as the consumer preview version. No compatibility mode setting required.
